The Piano Lesson 2024

 Malcolm Washington makes his feature film debut with "The Piano Lesson," a challenging adaptation of the renowned play by August Wilson. Teaming up with a talented cast that includes his brother John David Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Danielle Deadwyler, Washington explores themes of inheritance—such as trauma, wealth, and history—offering a compelling depiction of Black heritage in America.

The Charles Family holds a treasured heirloom: an upright piano adorned with the faces of their ancestors. This piano was originally taken from their former slave owner, James Sutter (Jay Peterson), with the intention of passing it down through the generations. Fast forward to 1936, during the Great Depression, when Boy Willie (Washington) embarks on a journey from Mississippi to Pennsylvania with his friend Lymon (played by the charming Ray Fisher), aiming to sell the piano to purchase his own piece of land.

Blocking his path is his sister Berniece (Deadwyler), the owner of the piano, who is determined never to part with it. However, she struggles to share its history with her young daughter and rarely plays it. As the siblings clash under the roof of their somewhat indifferent uncle Doaker (a wise yet sardonic Jackson), "The Piano Lesson" unfolds. The film aims to bring together the familial conflict between Berniece and Boy Willie, seeking a resolution regarding how Black individuals should engage with their history.

In this film, John David Washington delivers a captivating performance, brimming with energy and ambition. His on-screen presence is almost overwhelming, serving as a stark contrast to Berniece’s viewpoint. His lengthy, vibrant speeches and animated gestures resemble those of a skilled orator, exuding charisma while often coming off as preachy compared to Berniece’s more subdued approach to her frustrations. Their characters are strikingly different, and Deadwyler’s portrayal is equally powerful in its subtlety; Berniece is just as strong as her brother. Deadwyler maintains a tight control over her performance, her neutral demeanor rarely taking up more space than her physical presence. Her rigid posture reflects both Berniece’s repression and her sense of righteousness.

The tension between Willie’s threat to take the piano and Berniece’s determination to keep it creates a charged atmosphere in the home, and Malcolm Washington skillfully weaves elements of magical realism into the narrative. The ghostly presence of Sutter adds to the turmoil, appearing in doorways or when water inundates the upper floor of Berniece’s house, primarily visible to Berniece’s religious perspective, which gives Boy Willie another reason to dismiss her concerns. Washington and his talented cast transform the home’s central setting from moments of intense, quiet tension to lively camaraderie expressed through drunken songs, capturing the multifaceted struggle with their violent past. Throughout this, the piano remains a steadfast presence at the heart of the home, serving as a stubborn reminder of its haunting legacy.

Washington navigates this allegory with a nuanced approach, avoiding condescending explanations. Washington’s film is infused with empathy for all viewpoints, allowing for a balanced exploration of how individuals engage with Black history in varied ways.
