Bad Boys 4 2024
I’m not outright accusing the writers of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” of relying on A.I., a sensitive topic in Hollywood right now. However, if a computer had crafted this blockbuster sequel, the result might not be very different.
“Ride or Die” serves as a more straightforward continuation of 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” than many might anticipate. It ticks all the boxes typical of this genre, but it does so in a way that feels disappointingly lackluster, shying away from any fresh or innovative ideas. While it does come alive at times thanks to its energetic visuals and editing, it ultimately lacks the spontaneity and creativity needed, opting instead to play it safe and avoid taking risks. It seems there was a third choice: Ride, Die, or Just Coast.
In "Ride or Die," many elements closely reflect those from the previous film, starting with the dizzying drive through Miami that kicks off both stories and culminating in a near-fatal encounter for a cherished character. In the last movie, Mike Lowery (Will Smith) was shot on South Beach, while this installment opens with Marcus Miles (Martin Lawrence) suffering a heart attack during Mike’s wedding to Christine (Melanie Liburd). The previous film's attempted murder sparked a storyline about friendship and seizing second chances, but this time, it takes a lighter turn as Marcus believes he has become essentially immortal. After his brush with death, the ghost of Captain Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano) reassured him that his time had not yet come, leading Marcus to take reckless risks, like running through traffic, despite his wife and work partner forbidding him from eating Skittles.

Unlike "For Life," which had a sense of urgency with the assassination attempt driving the plot, this film takes its time before diving into the action. While Marcus was fighting for his life, Conrad-Wan Kenobi warned him that “a storm is coming,” which manifests as a cartel enforcer named McGrath (played by a rather lackluster Eric Dane), who serves merely as a plot device for action sequences. This film introduces one of the most poorly developed and ineffective villains seen in a blockbuster in years, as he frames Howard for corruption by funneling drug money into the late captain’s account. With Howard’s reputation at stake, Marcus and Mike realize they must clear his name at any cost, a task that requires insider knowledge from the imprisoned Armando (the charming Jacob Scipio), who is Mike’s son from the previous film.
A "Bad Boys" film wouldn't be complete without the protagonists challenging the system, and this installment introduces a potential future Miami mayor, Lockwood (Ioan Gruffudd), who is romantically involved with Mike’s ex and the new Captain, Rita Secada (Paola Nunez). Additionally, we learn that Captain Howard’s daughter, Judy (Rhea Seehorn), is a US Marshal, and her daughter Callie (Quinn Hemphill) joins the fray, primarily serving as another damsel in distress. The cast is quite large, featuring Tasha Smith as Marcus’s wife Theresa (a recast from Theresa Randle), along with the return of Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig, plus several random cameos—some inspired, while others merely echo better moments from earlier films.
At its core, a Bad Boys movie revolves around its leads—the chemistry between Smith and Lawrence has always been the reason fans adore these films. The charm of the 2020 installment lay in their ability to maintain that chemistry after 17 years. However, this time around, it feels less cohesive, with many jokes in the first half missing the mark and the dramatic moments coming off as shallow and overly familiar. This results in a film that, while shorter than its predecessor, feels significantly longer due to its awkward pacing. While depth isn't the main draw for a Bad Boys film, writers Chris Bremner and Will Beall struggle to find the right tone. This is particularly evident when they introduce more complex themes like rampant corruption and the villain’s radicalization through torture, only to leave them unexplored. If the intention is to be silly and lighthearted, it would be better to fully embrace that rather than casually referencing how 9/11 transformed the world.

Directors Adil and Bilall certainly know how to create engaging action sequences, with their passion for drone photography taking center stage in the film. Each shootout is enhanced by a drone camera that circles the action, adding a dynamic element that propels the movie forward. While it may be true that Smith and Lawrence aren't quite executing John Wick-level choreography at this stage, the chaotic fluidity of the action becomes the film's standout feature. It's visually striking and keeps the audience's attention as they absorb the scenes. The helicopter chase and the climactic shootout at a gator farm are particularly entertaining, even if the plot and character motivations become increasingly nonsensical as the story progresses (not to mention the questionable physics that grant Marcus superhuman strength in the helicopter). Scipio deserves recognition for infusing the action scenes with a level of intensity that the rest of the film often lacks; he could easily lead his own 'Bad Boys Jr.'
"Bad Boys for Life" surprised audiences as a long-awaited sequel that successfully combined nostalgia with contemporary action filmmaking just before the pandemic hit. It's easy to see why the creators of "Ride or Die" opted for a familiar formula rather than taking risks and expanding on what made the previous film successful. While this choice may make financial sense, it doesn't necessarily translate to quality. Even A.I. can recognize that.
