Ricky Stanicky 2024

Before Judd Apatow dominated the comedy scene with films centered on eternally immature men, there was Peter Farrelly. Alongside his brother Bobby, Farrelly created a range of films that could be charmingly humorous—albeit sometimes inappropriate—such as “Dumb and Dumber” and “There's Something About Mary.” However, his solo venture, “Movie 43,” is often remembered as a notorious disaster. Since then, Farrelly has explored television, won an Oscar for “Green Book,” and tackled the dramatic Vietnam War era in “The Greatest Beer Run Ever.” Now, he has returned to the familiar territory of outdated male-centric comedies with “Ricky Stanicky.”

“Ricky Stanicky” comes across as a throwback, but not in a way that evokes fond memories. Instead, it feels like a rehash of overused jokes and clichés, lacking any fresh or clever insights. With Farrelly sharing writing duties with five other writers and two additional contributors credited with the story, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where things went awry without concluding that the entire project misses the mark.

Ricky Stanicky isn't initially presented as a character in the film. Instead, he is an imaginary figure created by three young boys to escape the consequences of a disastrous prank involving a "poop bag on fire." Over time, as shown in a cartoon credit sequence, the boys use Ricky as a scapegoat for various mischief and poor choices. Even as adults, Dean (Zac Efron), JT (Andrew Santino), and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) continue to invoke Ricky as an excuse to abandon their families, but really, they just want to enjoy fun outings like sports games and concerts. When their secret escapades catch up with them, their partners insist on meeting the notorious Ricky Stanicky. To maintain the ruse, they hire a down-on-his-luck alcoholic actor named Rod (John Cena) from Atlantic City to portray Ricky at a family gathering, leading to a series of comedic situations. However, the humor often gets overshadowed by jokes about women's appearances and racially insensitive remarks.

Much of "Ricky Stanicky" feels immature and lacking in genuine humor, relying on prolonged gags, lowbrow jokes, and varying levels of cringe-worthy comedy. William H. Macy plays the role of Dean and JT’s boss, often unintentionally making crude gestures that suggest inappropriate acts during corporate meetings. Jeff Ross appears as a quirky rabbi who mistakenly takes ketamine and struggles to perform a bris. The director of "Green Book" has made the only Black character, Wes, an unemployed stoner, while Dean and JT enjoy white-collar careers. This might appeal to some viewers, but I am not one of them.

Efron and Cena deserve recognition for making the most of a challenging situation. Efron, portraying Dean, has the opportunity to delve into some emotional moments as he navigates the chaos Rod, played by Cena, brings into his life and the lives of his friends and girlfriend. This journey prompts Dean to mature, and Efron captures this growth with a sincerity reminiscent of some of Farrelly’s more successful comedies. Cena fully embraces the role of Rod, taking it to the extreme—he showcases the effects of alcohol withdrawal, delivers comical impressions of rock stars with humorous twists, and casually weaves in facts and stories as if he’s lived a lifetime of adventures, including working with Bono and battling cancer. Despite the script's shortcomings, Cena shines, often outclassing his co-stars by maintaining a serious demeanor while engaging in absurd antics.

While Cena’s antics, like evading supposed hitmen in a Britney Spears-inspired outfit, and Efron’s pained reactions to Rod’s relentless impersonations can be amusing, the film's other flaws hinder prolonged enjoyment. It’s not long before something occurs that disrupts the mood, or a joke is repeated to the point of losing its humor. “Ricky Stanicky” ultimately presents a mixed experience, serving as a reminder that some childhood games are best left behind.
