Rez Ball (2024)

The Toronto International Film Festival has showcased the world premieres of “Unstoppable,” “The Fire Inside,” and director Sydney Freeland’s “Rez Ball,” signaling a strong resurgence of the “inspired by true events” sports drama. Co-written with Sterlin Harjo, co-creator of “Reservation Dogs,” the film draws from the nonfiction book “Canyon Dreams,” which chronicles a season of basketball for the Chuska High School Warriors, a Navajo team that clinches the state championship in New Mexico.

From the outset, viewers can anticipate the film's emotional journey, beginning with the introduction of the teammates and their struggles. We first meet Nataanii Jackson (Kusem Goodwind), the star player grappling with the loss of his mother and sister, who were killed by a drunk driver a year prior. Next is his best friend, Jimmy Holiday (Kauchani Bratt, who brings a delightful charm), who juggles a job at a burger restaurant before school to help support his single mother, Gloria (Julia Jones). Lastly, we have Coach Hobbs (Jessica Matten), a former WNBA star who has returned home, facing challenges as she navigates this new chapter in her career.

Even though Nataanii shines in the season opener, leading his team to victory, the loss of his loved ones weighs heavily on him. His body language is closed off, as if he’s retreating into himself. On the court, he moves gracefully, sinking basket after basket with ease, showcasing his natural talent for basketball as if it were second nature. However, off the court, a palpable sadness lingers around him, setting him apart from his teammates. When he fails to show up for the next game, the team receives devastating news that rocks them to their foundation. With some reservations experiencing some of the highest suicide rates in the nation, it appears this young athlete has chosen to escape the burden of his sorrow.

The narrative then pivots to focus on Jimmy, who previously felt like a minor character; this sudden shift offers a deep dive into his thoughts and feelings. The situation intensifies when Coach Hobbs, tasked with helping the team navigate their grief and the ongoing season, names Jimmy as the new captain. Her team-building activities are both creative and engaging. One day, she takes the team to her grandmother’s sheep farm, where they must collaborate to round up sheep that have wandered off into the mountains. It is during this experience that Jimmy starts to appreciate the significance of Navajo traditions, including the language itself.

Following a series of tough defeats, the team discovers resilience and even a competitive edge by embracing their traditions, calling plays in their native language to keep their opponents guessing. This clever tactic leads to one of the film's best jokes, referencing the Nicolas Cage movie “Windtalkers.” Throughout the screenplay, Harjo and Freeland skillfully balance the more serious scenes with witty, sometimes self-mocking humor, often provided by a duo of color commentators who seem to have an endless repertoire of frybread jokes. The outcome is a film that feels both familiar and refreshingly unique.

Freeland shines in capturing the basketball scenes, employing smooth camera movements to track the ball and using stylish slow motion during team plays that lead to scoring. These action-packed moments are well complemented by numerous character-driven scenes that allow the lead actors to express their traumas, joys, and the complexities of being human. However, with such a large ensemble cast, not every character receives the development they deserve. For instance, it’s somewhat surprising to see a talent like Amber Midthunder relegated to a supporting girlfriend role, yet she makes the most of her limited screen time.

The main storylines could be more tightly interwoven. The film often neglects Coach Hobbs’ emotional arc for extended periods, which diminishes the impact of her concluding scenes. Additionally, Jimmy’s connection with his coworker Krista (Zoey Reyes), who assists in teaching the team the Navajo language, appears to serve primarily as a plot device rather than a fully developed relationship. On a positive note, the parallel journeys of Jimmy and his mother are well-executed. While he embraces his cultural roots and steps into a leadership role, she confronts her negative mindset, balancing work and attending AA meetings to address her struggles with alcoholism.

Rez Ball (2024)

Despite its structural shortcomings, “Rez Ball” succeeds in being uplifting without coming across as insincere. The film possesses a genuine warmth and humor that resonates both culturally and universally. It’s simply enjoyable from beginning to end. I’m pleased to say that the resurgence of feel-good sports movies is off to a fantastic start.
